The Bard Composix Kugel hernia mesh patch recall began as early as December, 2005. After being on the market for only a few years a number of patients reported experiencing serious side effects after using the Kugel hernia patch. Problems with hernia repair mesh arose as defective “memory recoil rings” in the patches began breaking after being inserted. The memory recoil ring breakages resulted in life threatening side effects including bowel obstruction and perforation, chronic fistulas, and infection.

In March of 2006 the FDA recalled additional lots of the Kugel hernia patches as problems continued to rise. The latest Kugel mesh hernia patch recall occurred in January 2007, again due to the life threatening hernia patch side effects.

Kugel Mesh Patch Recall

Each of the three Kugel mesh hernia patch recalls were sparked by failures in the memory recoil rings found in the products. The recoil ring is designed to open after the patch is inserted and provide a source of support and structure for the patch. When the Kugel hernia patch recoil ring fails sharp edges are produced which cause obstructions, perforations, infections, and other serious side effects.

Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch Reports

The makers of Bard Composix Kugel hernia mesh patches, Davol, knew as soon as fall of 2001 that the mesh hernia patches caused serious, life threatening, side effects. Unfortunately the manufacturers failed to issue a Kugel recall until 2005 causing numerous unnecessary life altering injuries to hundreds of patients in the United States.

Davol’s failure to provide safe, effective, hernia repair patches to patients has resulted in a class action lawsuit against the company.
